The Village where nobody lives anymore

The excitement flowed through Kino’s body, sending chills up his spine, as his heart pounded in his chest, so much that he thought it would explode. His steps quickened as he turned off the main road onto that old familiar dirt trail. Like a little boy, the 45 year old almost skipped along, as fond memories came flooding – his parents, his wife Annette, his friends – all so near. Kaluga Kafé Hosts Treat for Over 40 Old Harbour Kids

Kaluga Kafé feted boys from Sunbeam Children’s Home, and youngsters from the Spring Village Youth Development Programme, as part of their first anniversary celebrations. The youngsters were elated at the evening out at the casual diner and “chill spot” which has brought a new buzz to Old Harbour. Adrian Samuda, Managing Director, Kaluga Kafé expressed satisfaction at the evening’s events. “I’m thrilled to see the smiles on the children’s faces and how happy they are by just being here. It feels good to speak with them and impress upon them their power to take charge of their destiny, and make a positive difference for themselves, their families and their country,” he said. Samuda committed to providing a traditional Sunday dinner for the Sunbeam Children’s Home, once per month, from May to December, a move lauded by Desmond Whitely, Superintendent, of the Home. “We are grateful to Kaluga for extending this treat to the boys for the rest of the year,” Whitely said. “Part

Twenty years later, mother mourns her only child who died in car crash

As she watched her husband walk towards her in what seemed like an eternity, with a face of horror and shaky legs, nothing would prepare Esmin Davis Spence for the news that she was about to receive. Her only child had lost his life in a motor vehicle crash. That was 20 years ago but the memory is poignant in Spence’s mind, and the grief, though subsided, still tugs at her heart as she remembers her 26 year old son Paul Mattocks. “I was at the hairdresser under the dryer when I saw my husband walking towards me with shaky legs, as if something was wrong, as if he was taking forever to make about 10 steps to come to me,” recalled Spence. “He said Paul was in a crash, and my immediate response was ‘which hospital is he in’?” But the look on her husband’s face indicated the horror he was about to reveal.
