Jamaica by Bike Charity Ride Makes their Mark with Record Participants Proceeds from Heroes Weekend event go to Friends of Mona Rehabilitation Centre

Jamaica by Bike has over 150 registered riders for the 21st annual Heroes Weekend Charity Ride, the highest number of participants for the 158 mile ride since its inception.

The Ride which will take place on October 19, will see participants from across the island, as well as Cayman and the United States navigate the island’s roads - crossing several parishes as they pedal from Kingston to Negril, with the aim of donating funds to the Friends of Mona Rehabilitation Centre. The charitable efforts of the Jamaica by Bike Ride will be instrumental in purchasing a suction machine, an emergency trolley and a medicine trolley – all crucial equipment needed at the Rehabilitation Centre.

Dr. Rory Dixon, Senior Medical Officer at the Mona Rehabilitation Centre explained that medical equipment was critical for the many patients at the Centre. “This equipment is important to our job as we work towards making our patients’ quality of life better. As individuals, even though we feel energetic and healthy, our lives can change in an instant. When that happens, a place like this Rehabilitation Centre provides the assistance needed to get back on your feet.” said Dixon. “We have been fortunate to benefit from the Jamaica by Bike Charity Ride for a number of years, and we are very appreciative of their efforts,” he added.

Toyota Jamaica on board for the second consecutive year
Tom Connor, Managing Director of Toyota Jamaica, announced that he was thrilled to be part of the Ride for the second consecutive year - providing much needed assistance in the actual staging of the event. “It’s a wonderful event that sets people a target to train for, and it encourages more Jamaicans to get involved in this great sport. At the same time it’s raising money for a very worthy cause. We see where there is an obvious need for assistance; and with that, we have come on board again to offer a helping hand.  By doing so, we hope to assist with saving and preserving the lives of patients at the Rehabilitation Centre,” Connor said.

Martin Fong Kong, one of the Ride organizers expressed gratitude for the sponsors of the event, without whom, he said, the event would not be as successful. “Sponsorship plays a big role in what we do, and with assistance from Toyota Jamaica, WISYNCO Group, KFC, The Gleaner, JP Tropical Foods and CAC 2000 Ltd., our helping hand has been extended by far,” he said.

About the Ride
The Jamaica by Bike Organization has its origins in the Negril Ride event, which was conceptualised and first accomplished by three pioneering road cyclists, Dr. Franklyn Bennett, Paul Andrew Goldson and Tim Byam, back in 1992.  It was initially envisioned as a test challenge for the amateur cyclist after a full year of training. It was a daunting task, but the challenge soon got the attention of the cycling public, and soon after, the ride was established as an annual event on the cycling calendar.

The nature of the ride has also evolved into a social event which marks the start of the National Heroes weekend in Jamaica, attracting both recreational and professional cyclists locally and internationally.
Jamaica by Bike through its membership and events is dedicated to promoting healthy lifestyles, fitness, teamwork and family bonding while raising money for worthy charities. The primary objective has always been to have fun while making a difference in the lives of others.
