Bill Express Invests In Education

Company Sponsors Over Half a Million in Scholarships to PATH Students

Bill Express continues to demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the educational development of youth in Jamaica, pumping $540,000 into this year’s Programme of Advancement through Health and Education (PATH) Top Achievers’ Award.

The top two scholars Toshiba Alexander of Knox College, and Texroy Brown of Dinthill Technical High attained 10 and nine distinctions respectively, each with a credit in the 2013 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations and will each receive a cash prize of $120,000. Toshiba edged the top award as a prefect, and member of her school’s quiz team and environmental club; while Texroy stood out as Deputy Head Boy for Dinthill and they were both elated and unreserved in their gratitude to Bill Express and PATH.

Toshiba who has hopes of becoming an obstetrician said, “I think PATH is a very important initiative as it gives students the necessary financial support to excel and it proves to me that regardless of one’s social status, with a sound education you can move up the social ladder.”  She added that, “My father is a farmer and I am happy that the prize from Bill Express will further ease the burden of my school expenses for my final year.” Similarly Texroy said, “If it was not for PATH, my attendance at school would have been negatively affected and I am really grateful to Bill Express as the prize will be used to pay my school fees and other expenses for the upcoming school year.”

Funds will also go to runners up from high schools across Jamaica namely; Clarendon College, St. Jago, Immaculate Conception, and Merl Grove. These students copped at least nine distinctions in their 2013 CSEC examinations, in addition to showing consistent involvement in leadership and extra-curricular activities. First runner-up Shanna-Kay Wright will receive $90,000 and the second runners-up, Sherika Anderson, Elisabeth Brown and Kayann Boucher will receive $70,000 each. All students will receive replica trophies as a keepsake and reminder of their achievement.
Sandra Forbes, Senior Marketing Manager, GraceKennedy Remittance Services (GKMS) said the company is proud of the opportunity to reward the students who have displayed resilience and excellence despite circumstances that could have been a deterrent to learning.“We are focused on the educational development of our youths and these students have navigated the harsh economic climate with the help of the PATH and have achieved academic excellence,” said Forbes. “We believe they should be rewarded for their achievements, and encouraged to continuously strive for excellence.”
