UPS Foundation donates US$30k to Alpha Boys' School

The UPS Foundation, the philanthropic division of UPS (NYSE: UPS) that leads global citizenship programs, today hosted a grant-presentation event to donate USD $30,000 to the Alpha Boys’ School. The organization is a vocational training facility that provides educational opportunities for young men in the areas of agriculture, green house farming, meat processing and catering, among others. The UPS Foundation’s grant will subsidize the St. John Bosco Children’s Home in Mandeville by improving the school’s computer lab and lunch program to provide nutritious meals to its students.

Company executives present at the event included UPS Americas Region Caribbean country manager; Pedro Capote; UPS Jamaica country manager, Rachel Matthews and UPS Americas Region vice president of human resources and labor relations Charnley Conway. From the Alpha Institute, CEO, Sister Susan Frazer and public relations director, Charles Arumaiselvam were in attendance.

“It’s a privilege to have joined St. John Bosco and help build a stronger career training program for its students,” said Pedro Capote. “The UPS Foundation is proud to help empower local communities by supporting organizations that foster positive growth and development.”

“We are grateful to The UPS Foundation for partnering with us to improve the lives of these young men. Efforts by esteemed organizations such as these, will go a long way towards making a positive impact on the careers of many of our students for years to come,” added Charles Arumaiselvam.

“With this donation we will be providing our students with 30 new computers designed to help them learn digital skills such as basic graphic design, which will better prepare them to enter for the workforce,” said Sister Susan Frazer. “Additionally, we will equip the lab with Internet access to enable students to do research and access important information and data for their trade training.”

This is the second donation awarded to the Alpha Boys’ School. In October 2014, The UPS Foundation donated $20,000 to the organization, which provided funding for several of the school’s skills training programs. In addition to donations made on behalf of The UPS Foundation, staff from UPS Jamaica continuously support the Alpha Boys’ School through volunteer efforts such as painting and restoring of the organization’s facilities.
